To Twitter or Not to Twitter?

I finally got my first official invite to Twitter -- from my sister-in-law, a woman who rarely answers her cell phone and doesn't use the internet for much other than email. It's odd she would be the first person to ask to "follow" me. But here's the thing - I don't have a Twitter account and it just seems like one more thing to keep up with that I will ultimately fail at...so, dear readers, what's the point? What benefit do I get from Twitter that I don't get from blogging or Facebook or email or any of the other technologies that have taken over my life? Discuss.

  1. I've kind of fallen off the twitter bandwagon, especially since the application I used to merge facebook and twitter stopped working on me.

I used to use it primarily to follow celebs I thought were worth it (Wil Wheaton, Nathan Fillion, characters from Big Bang Theory, Kevin Smith, etc...)

I used a web twitter browser that was excellent (brizzly.com) and if you decide to join the twitter-verse, I would highly recommend it.

  2. I've been neglecting my blog and Facebook never really took off with me but Twitter...I'm a twitter addict. That said, if you use facebook and blog regularly, I don't see much of a point of twitter other than to follow celebs, artists, news organizations to keep up to date on what's going on.

  3. I'm extremely biased against Twitter. It's one thing to post a status for a day on Facebook, but to constantly "tweet" the goings on in your life throughout every hour of your day? It's just information overload. Once you start following over 3 people, you're bombarded with updates about what they're eating, what they're feeling, and who they bumped into at the corner store. After awhile, you're so overwhelmed that you just shut yourself off to it. I prefer facebook, where I can filter who and what I read... and blogging, well we both know the release that brings!

I'd say unless you want and need a constant disseminating of needless information, steer clear of Twitter. Like you said, it's just another thing to keep track of...

  4. I reject Twitter.

It's too much of too little.

  5. I think Twitter is pointless. I wondered at one point if I should have an account as well, but I barely keep up with FB and my blog (lately)!

It seems more self-centered than FB and that can't be good~!:)

  6. Thanks all - I was sort of getting that it's just a Facebook status update, with the option of following popular people. And really, if I'm honest with myself, am I really part of the in-crowd? I'll stick to low tech Facebook and blogging I guess. :o)
